How to Buy Yarn Online in India Without Ordering the Wrong Thing
Buying yarn online is easy once you know which four numbers to look at. It is also where most first orders go wrong — the colour is right, the yarn arrives, and it turns out to be half the thickness the pattern wanted. This guide walks through how to buy yarn online in India without that happening.
1. Start with the weight, not the colour
"Weight" means how thick the yarn is, not how heavy the ball is. It is the single thing that decides whether your finished piece matches the pattern. On every Woollen House product page you will see it as a tag near the top, written the way patterns write it — DK / Light Worsted – 3, for example.
As a rough map: 4 ply is fine and light, 5 ply and 8 ply are the everyday middle, and 12 ply or chunky works up fast for winter pieces. If a pattern says DK and you buy chunky, the same number of stitches will come out roughly half again as large.
2. Check the metres, not just the grams
Two 100 g balls can hold very different amounts of yarn. What you actually need is the length. Our 8 ply acrylic yarn is 100 g and 125 m per ball; milk cotton 5 ply is 50 g and 125 m. Same length, half the weight — because cotton and acrylic are different densities.
When a pattern asks for "900 m of DK", divide by the metres per ball and you have your answer. Grams alone will mislead you.
3. Match the needle or hook size
Each yarn lists the needle and hook range it is designed for. The 8 ply above is happiest on 4–4.5 mm needles or a 4–5 mm hook. Buying the yarn and the right tool in the same order saves a second delivery — see knitting needles and crochet hooks.
4. Buy all your yarn in one order
This is the one experienced knitters never skip. Yarn is dyed in batches, and two balls of the same shade from different batches can differ just enough to show as a line across your work. Ordering the full quantity at once means it comes from the same batch. If you are unsure how much you need, buy one extra ball rather than one fewer.
5. At checkout
Add everything to the cart, then use the pincode checker on the product page before you pay — it tells you the delivery estimate and whether cash on delivery is available where you are. We ship across India. Once the order is placed you will get a confirmation, and tracking as soon as it is dispatched.
A five-minute first order
If you just want to start: pick a mid-weight yarn in a colour you like, one 4 mm needle or hook, and one ball more than you think you need. Almost every beginner project — a scarf, a granny square blanket, a baby cardigan — works in that range.
Frequently asked questions
Is buying yarn online safe if I cannot feel it first?
Yes, as long as you read the fibre and weight. Acrylic is soft, warm and machine washable; cotton is cooler and firmer; velvet and feather yarns are soft but stretch more. If you are unsure, order one ball of a shade before committing to a full project.
How do I know the colour on screen is the real colour?
Screens shift colour slightly, which is why every product page carries a note about it. Photographs on our listings are shot of the actual yarn, not rendered swatches, so they are close — but for an exact match to something you already own, order a single ball first.
Can I order just one ball?
Yes. There is no minimum. It is a sensible way to test a new yarn before buying enough for a whole garment.
What if I run out halfway through?
Order the same shade again and check whether the dye lot matches. If it does not, a common trick is to alternate rows between the old and new ball for a few centimetres so the change blends instead of forming a line.
